FROM THE BRIDGE |
|
After a very successful Assembly in the Caribbean island, organized by Rod and taking on a nautical theme, we commenced our 2011/12 passage with an equally impressive handing over of the helm of our club at Van Gaalens. The event was a grand affair with our DG Anton and PDG Ronnie onboard. A big thank you to Annalies and Estelle and their teams for making the launch a great success. After the first Board meeting, where each of our team leaders presented their plans and goals for the coming voyage. I came away enthusiastic and excited. Our TLC team have already been very busy investigating numerous possible projects that need assistance. Our fundraising team have equally presented us with their goals, which should allow us to fulfill our objectives. Dave and Trudi have been busy at Jedidiah and should be bringing this project to a very accomplished closure shortly. But it is not all work as Arina and Rod have planned some really interesting and fun socials for us. We start off with a wine tasting on the 29th July at the Ou Pastorie. Mike and his vocational team have some very forward thinking ideas that they will be implementing. JC has taken his portfolio of International relations very seriously and as we are fighting a very cold spell here he is fostering international relationships aboard a yacht in far warmer climates. Colchester club of the UK have been in contact with us and are very interested in being involved once again with a project at Opkyk. Johan and Estelle are full ahead with plans to send young adults on short term exchanges, one to South America, one to Turkey and one to Germany. Our foundation team of Josh, Dave and Cliff have their sails set and are forging ahead with their projects. Genesis, feeding scheme and wheel chairs. We await the arrival of blankets, where Cliff has arranged matching funding for. John and all his teams have been hard at work, our Induction dinner received good coverage in the Kormorant. The Vulture project is well on course. At our business meeting of the 18th July how nice it was to see the Ann’s joining us. They also have some very interesting and exciting things planned for the year. So with Uli watching our coffers in his normal immaculate way and with John at the navigation table to help and guide us through the next year’s passage, I know that we are in for a really pleasurable and satisfying journey in servicing our community. Yours in Rotary Roy |

The month that was - By “the Snippet Master” We really started off the new Rotary year with an Assembly at Caribbean Beach complex, where the incoming president arrived across the water on a barge. The theme was nautical and most members and Ann’s dressed up as pirates!! Does this not say something about us South Africans! ( I have made sure that I have spelled nautical correctly as I was assured on several occasions that the theme was nautical and not naughty as it represented the incoming president’s passion for sailing!!!) |

| The Induction of the President was a grand affair at Van Gaalens Cheese farm . Visitors included the incoming District Governor Anton Meerkotter and Ann and current AG Ronnie and Genny Schild. The theme was again nautical and this time Estelle did the most stunning floral table centre pieces – sailing boats. John Wesson received a Paul Harris for his commitment to Rotary over the last few years. (Always supporting us all in Rotary, his long standing passion in Planet Earth and going the extra mile in making our Club so successful) John and Jenny Wesson and Johan Leach received the 100% attendance awards for the year. |

| Our first fellowship function was a wine tasting at Die Oue Pastorie in Skeerpoort on the 29 July 2011. We all enjoyed interesting snippets about the Winery / Farms being represented. The wines tasted are not available through the commercial outlets so it was a privilege to get an intro into and a tasting of these “ private cellar” wines. Everyone agreed that one of the desert wines a grappa was not their favorite!! Supper served was table de hotel with interesting choices – I am advised done to prepare the palette in order to show the wines off at their best! |

Our first Rotary
Club Board meeting was held on the 13 July where the
Chairman of the Committees started getting into their roles
for the year. Frank Seewald had a knee replacement and is back on his legs and at meetings doing well. Mike King had a repair of an inguinal hernia and is doing well at home. John & Jenny Wesson’s eldest daughter Candice married Marcel Du Preez at on the 7 August at the Moon and Sixpence. From Roy re son Anthony from “down under” Good day, As you may know, I will be cycling through Cambodia in November to help raise much needed funds to help the Sunrise Village support the children. Children come to
Sunrise Children Villages in a myriad of ways: parents or
other family members have been killed or maimed by
land-mines or died of hunger or disease. When these children
are rendered homeless, the villagers sometimes make every
effort to care for them, but more often than not, they are
taken into homes and used as slave-labour in return for food
and a place to sleep until their plight is brought to the
attention of Sunrise. We are enormously grateful to the support received in the events to date, if you are able to support this excellent cause further – please take a moment to view our online fundraising web pages tabulated below to help us to reach our goal.
